One of the top free-agent guards, Fred VanVleet has signed a massive deal with his former team. The 26 year old guard, signed a massive four-year, $85 million deal with the Toronto Raptors. VanVleet was one of the top players on the market. He will also have a player option in Year 4.
VanVleet has earned the benefits for his grind. His story represents one of the best development stories in the entire NBA. VanVleet worked hard from being an undrafted rookie to making the team in training camp to a key part of the Toronto’s bench unit to a crucial part of a title team and now that type of a player who can demand more than $21 million per year.
With retaining VanVleet, Raptors will keep him in a role which he succeeded throughout the last season. He will be a sharing playmaking guard along with Kyle Lowry and serving as their primary point-of-attach defender. Very rarely does somebody pressures the ball the way VanVleet does, and hardly anyone his size is as effective defending wings.
The Raptors had the second-best record in the whole league, only behind Milwaukee Bucks, with 53 wins and 19 losses. They earned the second seed entering the playoffs. The Raptors swept the Brooklyn Nets 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs. In a nail-biting seven-game series, they fell to the Boston Celtics 4-3. Fred VanVleet had a big role in Toronto’s success. He averaged 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game during the regular season. He bettered his stats during the playoffs averaging, 19.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game.
This will be his 5th season playing for the Raptors. Now that the Raptors retained their guard spot with VanVleet, they can now direct all their focus on the center position. Both their previous centers, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka remained unrestricted free agents.
