President Donald Trump has mocked Lakers star, LeBron James, After learning that viewership for the finals game went down by almost 70 per cent.
Only 5.6 million people tuned in to watch the Lakers won the series Game 6 on Sunday, making it the lowest-rated NBA finals ever.
With the pandemic forcing professional basketball players into a Florida ‘bubble’ and the audience being banned from court because of social distancing norms, the 35-year-old James and his teammates have attracted attention for kneeling over a Black Lives Matter decal and encouraging Americans to vote this upcoming election.
Trump – who has been in a bitter back-and-forth with the basketball legend for years – appeared to hint that political messages and racial justice at the games seemed to be doing them no favours.
In a tweet, the President shared an article that spoke about ratings for the NBA Finals Game 6 drop 70% from last year. He wrote that people in China could have been watching it, but he doubts it. He also exclaimed, “Zero interest!” at the end of the tweet.
In 2019, about 18.34 million fans watched the Toronto Raptors defeat the Golden State Warriors.
This quote is not the first time Trump has targeted the NBA. When the restart began in the Orlando bubble, he said he would stop watching players because they were taking the knee during the national anthem. He thinks it’s disrespectful to the American flag and national anthem.
On the other hand, former President Barack Obama reacted in a different way, congratulating the LA Lakers and Seattle Storm on their NBA and WNBA championships, respectively. He added that he was proud of all teams and players who used their platforms to take a stand against the rampant racial injustice and police brutality going on in the USA, currently.
