The tug of war between popular IPL franchises Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Capitals to rope in ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for the 13th edition of Indian Premier League has finally come to an end as Delhi secured the services of the classic pacer. The officials of Delhi Capitals franchise have recently stated that the move to take Ashwin in the team has been completed and the announcement will be made in the near future. While on the other side, the owners of the Punjab franchise didn’t confirm anything about the release of right-arm pacer from the team.
The Director of Cricket Operations of Kings XI Punjab, Anil Kumble has recently said on the development, “No decision has been taken yet. I have just come on board, in the last one week. We will know in the due course the decisions we are going to make. The players we are going to retain, the players we are going to trade, none of those areas have been looked into”.
If Ashwin will join the Delhi Capitals squad then Punjab could appoint talented player K.L Rahul as the new skipper of the team. The top-order batsman Rahul is the only cricketer in the team who can understand the working of KXIP easily. Not only this, but he is also aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the team very well.
The 33-year-old experienced cricketer R. Ashwin led the team of Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2019. He played 14 matches for the team as a captain and picked up 15 crucial wickets from those encounters. Despite all these efforts he failed to take his team to the playoffs. As a result, Kings XI Punjab lost one more season of IPL. But in the upcoming edition, Punjab is all set to emerge stronger and aiming to win the lustrous trophy of IPL 2020.
Earlier in the last month, the co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, Ness Wadia had decided not to trade the star spinner with Delhi Capitals. But it seems like Delhi has turned the tables in its favour. It will be interesting to see what will happen next.
