Aussies kick-started their prestigious T20I campaign against strong opponents of Sri Lanka on a winning note in front of the home crowd as the hosts outclassed the visitors by 134-run on Sunday at Adelaide Oval Stadium. All thanks to the unbeaten hundred of star player David Warner which guided the Kangaroos to an impressive win at home.
At the beginning of the enthralling T20I opener at Adelaide, it was the confident visitors Sri Lanka who won the toss and elected to bowl first. This decision of star skipper Lasith Malinga cost his team an important match against Australia. The hosts got off an excellent start as both the explosive openers of Australian Cricket Team Aaron Finch and David Warner established a record-breaking partnership of 122 runs against Lankans.
When on one side, Australian skipper Aaron Finch bagged 64 runs for his team in just 36 deliveries, swashbuckling batsman David Warner on the other, registered a brilliant century in just 56 balls along with 10 boundaries and four sixes. Lakshan Sandakan somehow got the crucial wicket of Finch at 10.5 over. But it was too late for the Lankans to roar back. As a result, Aussies set the monumental target of 233 runs against the hapless visitors in the very first match of T20I.
While chasing such a massive target of 234 runs in just 20 overs, Lankans got off to the worst possible start as both the openers Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis lost their wickets at an early stage. This was then followed by a string of wickets for Lankans as one by one all the Sri Lankan cricketers made their ways to pavilion. As a result, visitors failed to cross even the 100-run mark and went down for 99/9 after 20 overs.
Both the teams will next take on each other in the second T20 International encounter at The Gabba Stadium on October 30th. When on one side, Aussies will look forward to seal the three-match T20I series with a perfect win in an upcoming battle. On the other side, Lankans will be aiming to turn around the tables in their favour and bounce back in the match once again with 1-1 scoreline. It will be interesting to see who will dominate whom in the next T20I encounter.
