The national team selectors of Sri Lanka has appointed superstar cricketer Dimuth Karunaratne as the skipper of One Day International (ODI) Team before the beginning of grand cricket tournament, ICC World Cup 2019. Apart from leading ODI squad Karunaratne will also lead the Sri Lankan World Cup squad this year. Earlier, the star opener of Sri Lanka has represented his side in both ODIs and Test format. Though it was not that easy for Karunaratne to get a chance to lead Lankan squad in World Cup 2019 after he was being arrested over drink and drive charge in March 2019 at Colombo but the cricket board did not take any strict action against the player. Sri Lanka had won the Test match series against South Africa under the captaincy of Karunaratne. The win resulted in Sri Lanka becoming the first Asian team to win a Test series in South Africa.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board said on appointing 30-year-old as captain,”Karunaratne’s appointment was ratified by the Minister of Telecommunications, the Foreign Employment and Sports Honorable Harin Fernando.”
Though, Sri Lanka has not yet confirmed its 15-men squad for ICC World Cup 2019 which is going to start from May 30 till July 14 across the extravagant venues of England and Wales. Moreover, Sri Lanka squad will begin their cricket cup campaign against New Zealand on June 1, 2019 at Sophia Gardens, England. However, England has announced its World Cup squad on Wednesday and is all set to face South Africa in the exciting opening match of CWC 2019.
