Former Indian cricket team’s captain Anil Kumble is all set to hold the reigns of popular Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab as the head coach. This happened when the co-owner of the franchise Ness Wadia has finalized Kumble’s name as the Director of Cricket Operations at the board meeting of Kings XI Punjab on Thursday. With this update, one of the greatest leg spinners of all time Kumble has become the only Indian head coach in IPL 2020.
While appointing the legendary cricketer Kumble as the head coach of Kings XI Punjab, co-owner Ness Wadia quoted at Times of India, “Kumble is our choice to coach Kings XI. The world knows about his cricketing and coaching abilities. He’s a very calm, cool and collected person. He comes with a lot of experience in the IPL, having worked with two other franchises in the past, and also with the Indian team”.
Apart from Kumble, Kings XI Punjab also appointed former limited-overs captain of Australia George Bailey as the new batting coach for the upcoming season while the firmer Indian cricketer Sunil Joshi will take over the responsibility of a new assistant coach. South African star Jonty Rhodes will be designated as fielding coach and last but not the least Windies great Courtney Walsh is scheduled to take over as new bowling coach.
Notably, the brilliant off-spinner of Indian cricket squad Ravichandran Ashwin who led the Kings XI Punjab squad in IPL season 12 could join back the team in the upcoming edition also. Earlier the speculations were raising that he will perform for Delhi Capitals in the next season but it seems like the owners don’t want to lose him at any cost after watching his record-breaking performance for India in ongoing Test series against Proteas.
The auction ceremony of IPL season 13 is scheduled to be held on December 19th, 2019 in Kolkata. For the first time in the history of IPL, the Board of control for cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to conduct the auctions in a new city and not in Bengaluru. In the upcoming auctions, all the eight franchises will be allotted a balance of Rs 85 crore in total to build their respective teams.
