In the 21st match of ICC World Cup 2019, two least ranked teams on the points table, South Africa and Afghanistan will go head-on-head at Sophia Gardens on June 15th. Both the teams are battling hard to improve better in the game but back-to-back defeats in past matches crashed their hopes to move up in points table. Afghanistan has played a total of three matches in the 12th edition of prestigious cricket cup so far while Proteas has played four matches in the season.
Despite losing in all three matches they have played so far, Afghanistan still has some hopes to turn their fortunes in the tournament against South Africa. Afghans started their maiden campaign against defending champions Australia where they faced a major defeat with the margin of seven wickets at Bristol County Ground. But this was not the end of their bad run as in the second match against Sri Lanka the Gulbadin Naid-led squad again fall short by 34 runs at Sophia Gardens. In their third match against top-ranked team New Zealand, Afghans made all the efforts to grab at least one victory but Kiwis again won by seven wickets at County Ground. This time against Proteas they will not let the match go easily as they have been eyeing opening their account in 2019 World Cup journey.
On the other hand, South Africa opened their campaign against the hosting team England, the whole African squad was dismissed in just 39.5 overs at ‘The Oval’ stadium as a result of which England won the match by 104 runs. This was later followed by another defeat of the team against Bangladesh who thrashed the Faf Du Plessis led team by 21 runs at the same pitch. In their third encounter against India, Proteas lost by total six wickets at Rose Bowl Cricket Ground. Africans somehow managed to earn one point in the tournament as their match against West Indies was called off.
Head on Head records
Interestingly, South Africa and Afghanistan are going to face each other for the very first time in One Day International (ODI) match. Earlier, both the teams battled in T20 international tournaments where Proteas won both the matches against Afghanistan easily.
The weather is expected to be better in the 21st match between South Africa and Afghanistan but the temperature could drop gradually during the time of second innings. At the beginning of the match, the temperature will hover around 15 degrees Celsius but later light rain showers are expected at the pitch of Sophia Gardens.
