The bad weather conditions again played a spoilsport for the Indian cricket team as a highly-entertaining third and the final Test battle of the home series against South Africa has been suspended for Day 1 at Ranchi. When everything was going well for the hosts in the last Test encounter at JSCA International Stadium Complex on Saturday, the official cricket authorities forcefully stopped the play due to bad light in the post-tea session. As a result, Indians had to end the first day of the third Test at 224/3 on stumps.
The hosts got off a quite jerky start after winning the toss as the explosive opener Mayak Agarwal who came on the pitch to bat first with full confidence lost his wicket inside five overs. The 28-year-old experienced right-handed batsman who knocked a double century in the Test opener against Proteas was hunted down by none other than Kagiso Rabada in the 5th over. He walked off the field with just 10 runs in the kitty. However, his opening mate Rohit Sharma held the reigns of the team firmly and kept scoring for his team.
Later in the game, Kagiso Rabada shined for Proteas one more time as he sent Cheteshwar Pujara back to the pavilion on a duck. This was then followed by the dismissal of star skipper Virat Kohli in the match at just 12 runs off 22 balls. With this major setback, the Indian cricket team came under immense pressure.
The 32-year-old legendary batsman Sharma stunned the strong opponents with another hundred. In-form Rohit Sharma brought his squad back in the game with a much-needed 117 runs off 164 balls. While his teammate Ajinkya Rahane also helped the Indian boys to cross the 200-run mark with unbeaten 83 runs off 135 balls.
Now in the second day of the third Test, the match will be resumed with Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane on the crease. It will be interesting to see whether the hosts will be able to finish the three-match Test series with a clean sweep or Proteas will reduce the gap at the end. Virat Kohli-led team has already clinched the series with a 2-0 win now they are just aiming for a complete 3-0 whitewash against South Africa in Ranchi.
