The second match of the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League took place between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata where the hosting side won the match by six wickets. Andre Russell given heroic all-round performance in the match.
After winning the toss, home captain Dinesh Karthik opted to ball first and decided to play with Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Lockie Ferguson and Andre Russell as their four foreign players while SRH didn’t play with their regular captain Kane Williamson as he was injured. Bhuvneshwar Kumar went on to lead the side and they played David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Shakib Al Hasan and Rashid Khan as their four overseas players.
While David Warner was the best with the bat for SRH, so, Andre Russell was the pick of the bowlers for KKR with his spell of 3-0-32-2. Piyush Chawla was the others KKR bowler who was able to tick the wickets column.
Striking first, SRH openers Warner and Bairstow started well as the two went on to put a 112 runs stand on the board before the latter got out for 39. Warner, who was making a comeback in IPL played a tremendous knock off 85 runs which was followed by Vijay Shankar inning of 40* runs in just 24 deliveries. This helped Hyderabad post 181/3 on the board.
Chasing 182, KKR could not open with Sunil Narine as he got injured while fielding, so, Nitish Rana opened with Chris Lynn. Lynn got out cheaply for 7 runs Rana got joined by Uthappa. Both of them played good knocks to set the stage for KKR but the asking run rate went on hiking. After these two batsmen got out for 68 and 35 runs respectively, Andre Russell and Shubman Gill came to the crease. Russell played a mind blowing knock off 49 runs off just 19 balls while Gill hit two sixes in the last over to help KKR win the match with two ball to spare.
Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers as he was the most economical one (4-0-26-1). He got good support from Siddarth Kaul as well but rest all other bowlers were on a slightly expensive side. Hence, one of the best bowling lineup failed to defend the total.
