The 47th match of the Indian Premier League 2019 took place between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata where the home side emerged as the winners. KKR won this game by a margin of 34 runs and Andre Russell won the ‘Man of the Match’ award for his all-round performance in the game.
Visiting skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first and they made a tactical change as Barinder Sran made his debut and Anukul Roy missed out. KKR made three changes in their Playing XI as Harry Gurney, Rinku Singh and Sandeep Warrier came back in place of Carlos Brathwaite, Yarra Prithviraj and Prasidh Krishna.
Kolkata opened their batting with Shubman Gill and Chris Lynn and the two provided their team with the desired start as both of them got their respective fifties. Lynn scored 54 runs while Gill played his career best IPL knock of 76 runs. The momentum was carried on by Andre Russell who once again played a devastating knock of 80* runs off just 40 deliveries. Dinesh Karthik also played a few shots in the end that helped KKR post a massive total of 232/2 on the board after their 20 overs.
All of the MI bowlers conceded a lot of runs as Jasprit Bumrah one of the best limited overs bowler in the meantime conceded runs at an economy of of 11 runs per over. Hardik Pandya and Rahul Chahar were the only wicket takers in this inning but they too conceded a lot of runs.
The chase for Mumbai Indians didn’t begin in the desired way as they lost the wicket of in form Quinton de Kock for a duck inside the second over. After him, Sharma and Lewis also got out cheaply. The only notable knock in the entire MI innings was played by Hardik Pandya who single handedly kept his team alive in the game with his outstanding knock of 91 runs off just 34 deliveries which included 6 fours and 9 sixes.
With this victory, KKR is still alive in the competition of qualifying for the playoffs as they moved up in the Points Table and are now at the fifth position with 10 points out of 12 games.
