Former Indian cricketer turned expert Aakash Chopra pointed out the biggest weakness of Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 42-year old opined that the Virat Kohli-led side lacks a genuine death bowler for IPL 2020.
While doing a SWOT analysis for the ‘Bold Army’, the former KKR batsman reckoned that RCB’s death bowling was their major weakness. He felt that neither their foreign fast bowlers in Chris Morris and Dale Steyn nor their Indian contingent of Navdeep Saini, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj provides much confidence with their death bowling.
“One of their problems is the death over bowling. Chris Morris is not a top death bowler, even if you play Dale Steyn, he is also not a gun death bowler. Then who is the gun death bowler – Navdeep Saini, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj – they do not inspire the confidence that you would perhaps want.”
‘Who will finish the games for RCB?’
Chopra also highlighted the issue of absence of an established finisher in the RCB batting lineup. Although, he acknowledged that the franchise addressed this problem from last year to a certain extent.
The former Indian opener observed that Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar are relatively more experienced now. He said that they should be able to do a better job this time, in unison with Moeen Ali and Chris Morris.
“One of their problems has been their death over batting. If AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli play till the end it is fine, but if not, then who? It can be a matter of concern although it is better than earlier because they have Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar and Chris Morris. Dube and Sundar have played quite a bit for India and have scored runs and done their job; they are more experienced now.”
