Defending champions Mumbai Indians beat KL Rahul-led Kings XI Punjab by 48 runs to register their second victory of the season. With this win, the MI Paltan climbed to the top of the Points Table surpassing Delhi Capitals. Kieron Pollard won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his brilliant knock of 47* runs.
After winning the toss, KXIP skipper Rahul opted to bowl first at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium of Abu Dhabi. They made a single change in their side as Krisnappa Gowtham came in place of Murugan Ashwin. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians played this game with the same playing XI.
Bowling first, KXIP got the early wicket of MI opener Quinton de Kock (0) in the first over of the game. Suryakumar Yadav also lost his wicket in the powerplay overs. But Rohit Sharma played the captain’s knock of 70 runs before Kieron Pollard, and Hardik Pandya smashed quick runs in the end.
Sheldon Cottrell emerged as the pick of the bowlers for the Punjab-based franchise. Besides him, all the KXIP bowlers conceded runs at an economy of almost 10.
Dismal batting performance from KXIP batsmen
KXIP batsmen have relied heavily upon their openers so far in the season. But both Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul got out early without making much impact on the scoreboard. Nicholas Pooran played a fighting knock of 44 runs in the middle overs but lacked support from the other end. Hence, they fell short by 48 runs to slip to the sixth spot in the Points Table.
Rohit tried five bowling options, and all of them managed to tick the wickets column. Pattinson, Bumrah and Chahar picked up two wickets each, while Kruna Pandya and Trent Boult shared one wicket each.
