Two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders beat Chennai Super Kings by ten runs in match 21 of the ongoing tournament. Youngster Rahul Tripathi made the most of the opportunity given to him at the top of the innings. The 29-year old won the ‘Man of the Match’ award for a terrific batting performance.
After winning the toss, KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik opted to bat first at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium of Abu Dhabi. They took the field with the same playing XI in this game. On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings played Karn Sharma instead of Piyush Chawla.
Batting first, the Kolkata-based franchise took the field with a different opening pair as Rahul Tripathi came to bat with Shubman Gill. The former turned out to be the star for his side with a brilliant knock of 81 runs off just 51 deliveries. No other batsmen managed to score over 20 runs as KKR posted 167/10 on the board after their quota of 20 overs.
Apart from Deepak Chahar, all the CSK bowlers did their job really well. Dwayne Bravo picked three wickets while Curran, Thakur and Karn Sharma claimed two scalps each.
Another dismal batting effort from CSK batsmen
After the early wicket of Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson partnered well with Ambati Rayudu. The Aussie went on to score a half-century but didn’t get any support from the other end. None of the middle-order batsmen played a big knock to help their team chase the target. Ravindra Jadeja scored a few shots in the end, but that only helped in reducing the loss margin.
A combined bowling effort from the KKR bowlers helped them restrict the opposition at 157. This defeat further rues CSK’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
