The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) began with a bang after the three-time title winner Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) with five wickets in hand. The game went to the ultimate over before Faf du Plessis sealed the game at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Making a comeback after almost 62 weeks, CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to field first. CSK made a few interesting choices in terms of their foreign picks as experienced players like Dwayne Bravo and Imran Tahir missed out and youngsters Sam Curran and Lungi Ngidi got a chance ahead of them.
On the other hand, Mumbai Indians went with their expected lot of four foreign players. MI Paltan took the field with Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard, Trent Boult and James Pattinson.
MI openers Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock started their innings in a flash while playing at a run-rate of over 10 in the first four overs. After that, MI lost wickets in quick succession, and none of their batsmen scored big runs. Saurabh Tiwary emerged as the highest run-getter for them with his knock of 42 runs.
Comfortable chase for the ‘Men in Yellow’
The Chennai-based franchise started oppositely to that of the Mumbai Indians. After losing both the opening inside two overs with just six runs on the board, Faf du Plessis and Amabati Rayudu joined each other in the middle.
Ambati Rayudu became the first batsman to score a half-century in IPL 2020 before getting out on 71. Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran played quick cameos while du Plessis played till the end for his unbeaten inning of 58 runs. In a tough choice between Rayudu and du Plessis, the former was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ award.
