Former South African pacer Vernon Philander’s younger brother was shot dead in a Cape Town street on Wednesday. The South African media reported that the dreadful incident happened meters away from their family home in the Ravensmeade neighbourhood. He was fatally shot while delivering water to a neighbour.
The Philander family issued a statement stating they were ‘coming to terms with the brutal murder’. Vernon Philander took to Twitter to say that there are no details around the incident at the moment and speculation will make it difficult for them as a family to mourn in peace. He added that the murder is now the subject of a police investigation and they respectfully ask the media to give the police space to conduct a thorough investigation. He wished that his brother’s soul rest in peace and that Tyrone is forever in their hearts.
According to local police, the spring happened around lunchtime on Wednesday. No arrests have been made yet and they are investigating the case as a murder. A member of a community group said that Philander’s mother and other family members were in the yard of their house when they heard the gunshots. Vernon has two older brothers, Brandon and Darryl.
35-year-old Vernon Philander retired from international cricket at the beginning of this year. He served in the South African national team for 13 years when he became one of the best seam bowlers in the world. He has played 64 tests and 101 games across all formats for South Africa.
He was due to join Somerset, the English county side, this year but the deal got cancelled amid the coronavirus pandemic.
