As ICC World Cup 2019 is heading towards its climax, Indian tigers faced a big blow in the ongoing tournament. The talented all-rounded cricketer of Indian National Cricket Team, Vijay Shanker has been ruled out from the glitzy event due to a toe niggle.
The 28-year-old experienced player injured his toe during the practice session when ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah mistakenly hit him with his deadly yorker. This resulted in Vijay Shankar’s absence from his side’s match against England. In the last match of blue tigers against the hosts, Vijay Shankar was replaced by emerging player Rishabh Pant but his absence was still felt in the game.
On the eve of the match against England, star skipper Virat Kohli said about Shankar’s withdrawal,” Vijay Shankar has a toe niggle, Rishabh Pant is in. He brings in a lot of fearlessness. Once he gets to 20, then he’s unstoppable”.
Shankar started his world cup campaign on a high note as he dismissed two crucial Pakistani cricketers in the game. Though he didn’t get enough chances to show his batting skills but proved his bowling credentials after taking two wickets while giving away just 22 runs. However, Shankar played only 15 balls and scored just 15 runs during his batting innings. In his second match of the season against Afghanistan, Vijay Shanker managed to score only 29 runs off 41 deliveries and in that game he didn’t get the opportunity to bowl.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will now make a formal request to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to call-up the replacement of Vijay Shanker in Indian World Cup squad before their match against Bangladesh. However, the name of his replacement has not been revealed yet.
India will next face Bangladeshi squad in the 40th match of World Cup 2019 on Tuesday at Edgbaston Stadium. This time Indian players will hope to bounce back in the tournament as they lost their last encounter against England by just 31 runs. It will be interesting to see who will replace the all-rounder in the game.
