Ace Indian Gymnast Dipa Karmakar who was just few steps away from her dream to qualify for Tokyo Olympics 2020, suffered an injury during the final of Artistic Gymnastics World Cup 2019 at Baku. The injury forced her to pull back from Doha World Cup which is going to commence from next week. The vice president of Gymnastic Federation of India (GFI) shared the sad news by stating, “She had some problems in her knee before today’s final. She was feeling some pain yesterday but felt better after working with the physio. She attempted the vault finals today but fell on her first vault, aggravating the knee injury due to undesired landing”.
Earlier in the qualifying round of Baku world cup, the Indian Produnova performed higher difficulty Handfront 540 vault for the first time and despite such difficult vault, Dipa scored 14.466 and 14.133 points in two qualifying rounds of Vault with an average of 14.299. Dipa who conquered the fourth position at Rio Olympics 2016 won a bronze medal in the qualifying round of World Cup. World Cups of Baku and Doha are the part of eight-event qualifying system for Tokyo Olympics 2020. Dipa will come back to India for rehabilitation and once she recovers, the 25-year-old will sweat up for Asian and World championships. The Asian championship will kick start from June 13 to June 16 in Mongolia.
A ray of hope is still alive for the Tripura girl as she can still secure her Olympic berth by performing well in World Championship which is going to held at Germany from October 4 till October 13. Dipa was already troubled by her knee injury at the time of Rio Olympics after which she also had a two year lay-off. After returning back, Dipa clinched a gold medal at Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey in July 2018. She also won bronze in Artistic Gymnastics World Cup 2018 at Cottbus, Germany which will act as a strong bid for her selection in Olympics.
