Just a day after the historical win of golf legend Tiger Woods in Masters Tournament 2019, US President Donald Trump has announced to give an honour of Presidential Medal of Freedom to 43-year-old veteran player. Right after Woods won his fifth Masters title, Trump took to twitter to congratulate the great player and tweeted, “Because of his incredible success and comeback in sports (golf) and, more important, life, I will be presenting him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom,”. The win results in the major comeback of Woods after drastic setbacks and rehab periods.
Woods clinched his first major championship title after a gap of 11 years on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia. Earlier in 2018 the personalities like Babe Ruth, Roger Staubach and Alan Page were awarded with Presidential Medals of Freedom. Moreover Woods is not the only golfer who is going to be rewarded with this prestigious honour as players including Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus were also acknowledged with the medal in the mid-2000s consecutively.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom has been considered as the highest civilian honour in United States and is given to those eminent personalities who make outstanding contributions in national security or national interest, culture or other public or private endeavours and world peace. Over the past few year various sports figures have achieved this honour especially under the presidencies of George W. Bush, Barack Obama and now Donald Trump.
Ranking second in both Major Championships and PGA Tour, Woods has numerous golf records to his name in his career. Woods’ golden win in the grand golf tournament has created the buzz in social media as well.
