India’s Produnova Dipa Karmakar is aiming to secure her berth in Tokyo Olympics 2020 with path-breaking performances in two upcoming Artistic Gymnastics World Cups. Although, the gymnast skipped the Melbourne World Cup from February 21 to 24 as she eyes on good outings at back to back World Cups in Baku which is going to happen from March 14 to 17 and World Cup in Doha which will happen from March 20 to 23. The 25-year-old won a bronze medal in Artistic Gymnastics World Cup 2018 at Cottbus, Germany which will act as a strong bid for her Olympic selection. These two upcoming World Cup tournaments are part of eight-event qualifying system for Olympic 2020 and Dipa’s coach Bisweswar Nandi has made it very clear that nothing less than gold could work for her to qualify Tokyo Olympics. “she will have to win gold in the next 3-4 events of the World Cup she participates in,” Nandi added. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has cleared the World Cup trips for Dipa and her coach earlier this month. Dipa who finished fourth at the Rio Olympics clinched gold at Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey in July 2018.
Earlier, Dipa failed to perform in Asian Games 2018 at Jakarta because of her knee injury. She missed the vault final at Asian Games and also pull out of team event. However the gymnast from Agartala recovered on time keeping her hopes alive to win gold for country in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
While preparing herself for Olympic 2020 Dipa said, “This time the Olympic qualifications is through several routes including the World Cups. I want to explore all possible routes to increase my chances for the 2020 Olympic qualifications and my confidence has risen after winning a medal at the World Cup in Germany last year”.
