After a small hiccup in the pre-quarterfinals stage, star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat finally booked her seat in Summer Olympics 2020. The 25-year-old young wrestler Vinesh clinched bronze medal playoff bout in the 53kg category against Sarah Hildebrandt of USA by 8-2 scoreline.
After her upsetting defeat against reigning World Wrestling Champion Maya Mukaida in the last round, Indian wrestling fans somewhere lost the hopes of winning. But Vinesh is no less than any warrior she kept on fighting for her seat in Tokyo Olympics 2020 and eventually her hard work paid off. Though the bout was not that easy for Vinesh as the World No. 1 American wrestler Sarah gave her tough competition but at last it was Vinesh who came as the winner. With this emphatic win, the Haryana-born celebrity also became the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. However, Sarita Mor (57kg) and Kiran Bishnoi (76kg) also tried their best to top the race of Olympics qualifiers but failed to do so as they lost their respective qualification matches.
Earlier in the campaign opener, Vinesh defeated Olympic bronze medallist Sofia Mattsson by 13-0 and set her meeting with Japanese star Maya Mukaida where she was jolted by 7-0 defeat on Tuesday. But she didn’t lose the hope as she still got the chance of repechage in which she could turn her fortunes and she made that happen successfully.
After winning the bout against Sarah Hildebrandt at World Wrestling Championships 2019 Vinesh said, “I am very happy to qualify for Tokyo Olympics and get an opportunity to bag a medal in World Championships”
