Lionel Messi just does what he does best, i.e. destroying the opposition defence and that’s what the little magician did in the semifinals of the Champions League on Wednesday night against a clueless Liverpool.
The Barcelona attacker was at his top game and scored a brace to reach the 600-goal mark in club football. The Argentinei joined his rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the elite list who also broke the barrier last week.
Meanwhile, Messi took just 683 games to reach the milestone where on the other hand, Ronaldo scored 600 in 799 games to reach it.
Messi’s brace also took his overall tally for the season to 48 goals and his Champions League-leading tally to 12 this season. He is the leading candidate of winning the European golden boot too after ran riot to humiliate Liverpool at Camp Nou.
In the second half of the game, Messi took things into his own hands after Barcelona were struggling against Liverpool despite leading by a goal. The Reds put on a tough show, but Messi was the ‘X’ factor who changed the game. Messi’s free kick was the highlight of the match as it put the Reds on the backfoot with the scoreline reading 3-0 at the end of 90 minutes.
After an amazing night of football, Messi is not convinced with the win that much as he is focusing on the next tie to reach the final of the Champions league.
“It is not over because we are going to a ground that is very difficult, with lots of history, that presses rivals, but we are happy with today’s game,” Messi said. “This is the critical moment, the best moment, and we have to be more united than ever. At the start of the year we said we would do this together.”
Before the season starts, Messi told the Camp Nou crowd he will do everything in his capacity to bring the European trophy back to Barcelona and now he is doing everything to fulfill it.
