The Arsenal fans were treated to a nightmare at Anfield on Saturday. 5 goals past Bernd Leno is an understatement. The fans were reminded of the Wenger Era and that significant change hasn’t been made, even after 6 months with the new regime. Emery had to prove the haters wrong by winning against Fulham. The Cottagers were fresh from a victory against Huddersfield, but they knew that salvaging anything at the Emirates would be hard to come by. Aubameyang and Lacazette started for the gunners, whereas Mitrovic was the sole striker with Kamara on the bench for his penalty incident last time out.
Arsenal started off poorly. There were too many gaps in the defense. Koscielny and Mustafi looked like dinosaurs to the game, they didn’t know how to maintain the offside line. Sessegnon was in on goal in the 12th minute but squandered his shot away from the goal. He was inches away from the goal again in the 20th minute when Schurrle crossed in, but the young Englishman miskicked his shot to Ranieri’s despair. Granit Xhaka who was average for the first 23 minutes, scored in the 24th. Iwobi played a ball in to which Lacazette faked and Xhaka struck home. Arsenal were one goal up against the run of play. The Gunners maintained the pressure in the half with Lacazette and Aubameyang both receiving clear opportunities to score, but the duo failed to add Arsenal’s second in the first half. The half ended with Emery quite happy.
Arsenal needed a second goal to ensure their victory. Kolasinac dribbled past a couple to play in Lacazette who fired in an empty net. 2-0 to Arsenal, it was time for Ranieri to make changes. He introduced Kamara and Seri. The duo linked up insantly- Seri chopped the ball off Torreira and passed it on to Sessegnon who squared the ball to Kamara to score past Leno. 2-1 and the Emirates was a bit nervy. Emery brought on Ramsey who had an impact too. Kolasinac opened the flank and passed to Aubameyang who could hit the post, but the ball deflected to Ramsey who scored with a neat top right cornered finish. Aubameyang added his 14th goal of the season as Sokratis played him in to score from 10 yards out in the 83rd minute.
4-1 to Arsenal, as they are now only 2 points away from Chelsea at 4th. A champions league spot is still possible for the gunners.
