Arsenal, 5th in the table have been ranked as the 6th richest club in European football on Tuesday, however their manager Unai Emery spoke on his press conference on Thursday that they can only loan players, not buy. This made gunners fans mad, they weren’t in the top 4 and needed reinforcements in various positions. They began the match with no creative midfielder with Xhaka and Guendozi in the midfield. Arnautovic and Antonio led the line for the Hammers, whereas Aubameyang and Lacazette were the 2 strikers for the North-Londoners. The London Derby promised entertainment on paper.
However, on the field, it was an entire different story. The Hammers created the first chance with Antonio bursting on his flank, bettering Xhaka for pace, however his ball in the box was poorly finished off from Nasri, who was the Hammers debutant for the evening. Moments later, Lacazette bursted through the West Ham defense beating Ogbonna but fluffed his shot for Fabianski to gather smartly and safely. Aubameyang used his pace a couple of times, but to no good. He was surprisingly, unproductive in the first half. With both the keepers untroubled in the first half, the scores were 0 a piece at the end of the first 45.
The second half began with Hammer’s dominance. Corner after corner and finally came the first goal. Ogbonna diverted his header towards Nasri who played in a smart ball towards Rice. The English International buried his strike in the top right corner to give West Ham United the lead. Arsenal, surprisingly, weren’t looking to bounce back. There was no pressing, no confidence, no fluent passing with the ball. They lacked Ozil on the day. Emery called upon Ramsey who as pundits predict is leaving for Juventus in the Summer, running down his contract. He did add a bit of creativity, but both Aubameyang and Lacazette weren’t moving swiftly or making runs from behind. West Ham just wasted time for the remaining minutes and were happy with Arsenal flooding in crosses from 40 yards out. In a disappointing London Derby, the Hammers won by a goal to nil.
Emery and Arsenal’s board have to answer questions. Where was Ozil? Why don’t the club have money? The list just goes on. Arsenal are now just 3 points ahead of United who have a game against Tottenham. West Ham have a day to remember.
