Tottenham beat Chelsea in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final by 1 goal to nil. However, a lot has changed since that. Kane and Alli have caught injuries and will be out till March, Son went to the AFC to represent his country and Chelsea have signed Higuain. Chelsea were given a head-start with the Spurs not having 3 of their most effective players. Giroud, Hazard, and Pedro started for the Blues, while Llorente and Lamela were the 2 men up front for the North Londoners.
Tottenham were set out with a very defensive approach. Winks, Dier, and Sissoko all played as Defensive Midfielders. This allowed the Chelsea midfield to pounce with the help of their attackers. Chelsea’s first opportunity came through a set-piece. Hazard floated the ball to Giroud as the Frenchman bicycled the ball back to the box, but a Ross Barkley shot was blocked by Davies. Chelsea were pressing and had multiple corners in the process. Vertonghen headed the ball way but only to Kante’s feat who smacked the ball nutmegging 3 Spurs and into the back of the net. Chelsea were playing magnificently with Tottenham on the back foot. Furthermore, Davies was helped off the field due to an injury and was replaced by Rose. Minutes later in a swift Chelsea move, they doubled their lead and lead on aggregate with Azplicueta rolling the ball to Hazard who finished impeccably. With half-time approaching, Spurs saw their first sight on goal with Llorente squandering his shot to the crows. It was a great 45 minutes for Sarri’s men.
Pochetino needed to talk with his side and change tactics with them a goal down. He informed the full-backs to move forward and Winks to play more forward. The tactician got it right- Rose crossed in for Llorente who battled with Luiz to get some connection and scored Spurs goal. They were back in the tie. With the away goal superiority method not being used in the Carabao cup, they were level. Chelsea responded to the stadium’s roar. Hazard cut through 3 Spurs defenders before shooting directly on Vertonghen. Later, he passed the ball cleverly to Palmeri who crossed in for Giroud but he miskicked. Sarri brought on Willian and Kovacic but both couldn’t add meaningfully in the 90. Giroud was presented with an opportunity in the last minute as Palmeri crossed in beautifully, however, the Frenchman headed wide. The match went to penalties.
Tottenham kicked first with Eriksen scoring. Then Willian scored for the Blues. Lamela and Azplicueta both scored. But, Eric Dier and Moura missed for the Spurs with Kovacic scoring with swag. Luiz had the chance to win the game for the Blues and so he did, Chelsea beat Tottenham 4-2 on penalties and will face Man City in the Carabao Cup Finals.
