Star forward Alexis Sanchez lifted his team Chile to the quarterfinals of Copa America 2019 after scoring a match-winning kick against Ecuador at Fonte Nova Arena stadium on Friday. Both the team went head-on-head in the first half though it was attacking midfielder Jose Fuenzalida who grabbed the lead first for his team in the eighth minute of the match. But Ecuadorians were not in a mood to lose the game so easily as talented front-liner Enner Valencia fired an opener to equalize the game for his side at 26th minute. Valencia gave the 1-1 lead to Ecuador through the powerful spot-kick from a penalty corner before the first half ended.
At the beginning of the second half, both the teams struggled very hard to break the silence and at last, it was Chile again to sound the board at 51st minute with the help of spectacular footballer Sanchez who played like a warrior even after getting hurt during the first half.
When the ‘Red Devils’ beat the Ecuador squad in the mouth-watering Group C battle, Sanchez expressed himself about his painful injury in the game by saying, “I think I have a sprain, I hope it’s not too serious. At half-time they strapped it up, I played on with a bit of pain”.
With this ironical win, Chile reached the top position of Group standing and leading group with total six points from two games. While Ecuador is still struggling at last position with zero points in the table.
Earlier in their last match against Japan, two-time defending champions Chile clinched the victory with the great margin of 4-0 at famous Morumbi Stadium, São Paulo. In that match also brilliant player Alexis performed exceptionally well as he scored final goal for his team in the 82nd minute. Despite putting their best efforts Japan was unable to seal a lone goal in front of attacking Chileans.
Chile will next take on another Group C mates Uruguay on June 25th at Maracana Stadium whereas Uruguay will next face Ecuador at Mineirão stadium on the same day.
