The highly-enthusiastic squad of NorthEast United outplayed a goalless draw against defending champions Bengaluru FC in their very first match of Indian Super League 2019-20 on Monday. The reigning champions of grand football campaign who were looking forward to having a spectacular start in front of the home crowd against Highlanders held to a goalless verdict at Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

The high-voltage drama between both the teams began amid energetic cheering and hooting by the Indian football fans. The hosts got off the blocks very quickly and suppressed the visitors by playing some wonderful shots in the early minutes of the first half. As a result, the current ISl champions event won the golden chance to open an account in the 15th minute of the game with the help of destructive winger Ashique Kuruniyan who fired a shot from the left-back position. But unfortunately, it was prevented by the strong defence of Highlanders.

NorthEast United then tried to mark an opener in the closely-contested first half but it was also saved by the experienced goalie Gurpreet Singh Sandhu at 21st minute. This resulted in none of the teams managed to score even a single point at the end of the first half.

In the second half also, both the strong squads kept struggling against each other to score a lone goal but failed to find the net. However, Bengaluru FC found two big chances in the dying minutes to break the deadlock but again the Highlanders were not in a mood to lose. After so many violent efforts, the edgy nail-bitter finally came to an end and the referee blew the whistle with a 0-0 verdict.

With this hard-fought draw, NorthEast United earned at least one point in the current Indian SuperLeague points table and booked their third spot in the standings. On the other hand, Bengaluru FC also grabbed one point in the recent points table and reached to the second position.

Bengaluru FC will next take on the arch-rivals Goa FC on October 28th at Fatorda Stadium in Goa. While NorthEast United will next face the strong contenders Odisha FC on October 26th at the home pitch of Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Assam.
