SC East Bengal officially announced the signing of India international striker Jeje Lalpekhlua for the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 season ahead.
The 29-year-old expressed his delight by saying, “Every footballer in India wants to play for SC East Bengal one day. It is such a big institution. I am thrilled to join SC East Bengal in its first year of taking part in the ISL. I cannot wait to don the Red and Golds colour and give my best every time I take the field.”
Lalpekhlua who is fondly known as the ‘Mizo Sniper’, was associated with Chennaiyin FC since the inception of the league in 2014. After six seasons, he decided to part ways with the club this year.
In six years, Lalpekhlua has played 69 matches, in which he has scored 23 goals and provided 7 assists. He is the all-time second highest Indian goal scorer in ISL and sixth-highest goal scorer overall.
The last two seasons have been tough for the 29-year-old striker as he struggled with injuries.
In the 2018-19 season, he appeared in 16 matches representing Chennaiyin where he managed to score only one goal. Last season he remained out of action for a year.
The Mizo striker graduated from the Pune FC academy and made his professional debut for the Red Lizards in 2009. He then moved to Dempo and then to Mohun Bagan where he spent three seasons on loan from Chennaiyin.
In his career so far, he has won the I-League and Federation Cup with Mohun Bagan and two ISL titles with Chennaiyin FC. He has also played 56 international games representing India and scored 21 goals so far. He has also won the SAFF Championship for India on three occasions, 2009, 2011 and 2015.
