The two-time Indian Super League defending champions, Chennaiyin FC have finally made their headways to Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup at ‘The Arena by TransStadia’ in Ahmedabad. In the second leg of qualifying play-off round, Chennaiyin FC defeated Colombo FC by solitary goal stroked by Indian footballer Jeje Lalpekhlua in the Arena Stadium. After this Chennaiyin FC has become the first Indian Super League outfit to enter into the group stages of AFC Cup. The team had to be satisfied with a goalless draw in the first leg of the play-off on March 6, 2019. Jeje hit the goal in the 68th minute of the match which made his team win against opponents. The highest goal scorer in Indian Super League Jeje strikes the net after the ball ricocheted off by Colombo defender and fell towards him.

Chennaiyin FC had an amazing start for the must-win match but later in the game, it became hard for the team to knock Colombo’s door. Their first big chance came in the 14th minute when C K Vineeth sprang in the Colombo half and deliver the ball to Thoi on right but midfielder Isaac Vanmalsawma failed to connect with the resulting cross. The first half went goalless again.

Chennaiyin continued to play hard in search of a goal and Thoi Singh yet again found Vineeth in a loop and the forward took a touch before firing just over the bar, this time Vineeth had a great chance to hit the box but unfortunately Colombo keeper managed to parry his shot. Finally, after running pillar to the post an opportunity fall for Chennaiyin FC and at the 68th minute, Jeje Lalpekhlua’s left-footed strike hit the back of the net.

Chennaiyin Football Club will now be grouped along with the former champions of Hero I-League Minerva Punjab FC, Nepal’s Manang Marshyangdi Club and Bangladesh’s Abahani Limited Dhaka in Group E ahead of this AFC Cup 2019.
