FC Barcelona’s star player Lionel Messi could win Europe’s golden boot early than expected as he leads the charts with 34 goals, however, what makes the job easier for the Argentine is that second place Kylian Mbappe who has scored 30 goals, is more or less out of the race as he was recently handed a red card during a Ligue 1 clash.
The 20-year old PSG star is looking at a lengthy ban and with four matches yet to go, the season may be more or less over for the wonderkid which gives Messi the lead. Paris Saint Germain were handed another loss by Montpellier FC, making it four losses in five games played.
PSG may have clinched the Ligue 1 trophy, but their weakness is being exposed at the latter end which might cause plenty of problems. They recently lost the Coupe de France to Rennes on penalties, despite having their original attacking trio of Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani in front.
With Mbappe out of the scene for a while, this gives the Argentine plenty of matches to score away. With three more rounds yet to be played in the La Liga, Barcelona travels to Celta Vigo, host Getafe and play their final match against Eibar.
With Messi leading the charts with 34 goals (68 Points), Mbappe comes in second with 30 goals (60 Points), with Atalanta’s Fabio Quagliarella with 23 goals (46 Points). Unfortunately, Ronaldo cannot play keep ups with his rival as he stands on the 12th spot with 20 goals.
For Messi, it will be a different challenge as he also faces Liverpool in the semifinals of the Champions League as Barcelona host the Reds in the first leg at Camp Nou on Wednesday night. While the Catalan giants have exorcised the demons of the quarterfinals jinx, their road to Madrid has only Liverpool standing in between, who were last year’s finalists. Klopp’s side will hope to go all the way but know that a win will not come easy.
