After cruising through Porto in the quarters stage, the Reds will now face Lionel Messi’s Barcelona in the semifinals of the tournament to continue their journey in the UCL. Liverpool keyman Virgil van Dijk is all set to face Messi and he felt it will be hard to stop the world’s best player according to him. The Reds have been in fine form of late as their race for European and league success still lingers on.
“It’s going to be a great match-up for all of us,” Van Dijk told Viasport Football.
The 27-year old also said that he believes in teamwork and not in 1vs1.
“It’s about doing it all together, it’s never 1vs1, it’s never just me against a particular striker. It’s always us against everyone and I think that’s the only way we can defend well. And it’s going to be very hard and I think he [Messi] is the best player in the world but we’ll see.”
Messi has been in extraordinary form and in the quarterfinals against Manchester United, he broke The Red Devils defence on his own to score a brace. The defending La Liga champions thrashed United 4-0 on aggregate to enter the semifinals after three years.
Right now, the Argentine is leading the UEFA Champions League goals charts with 10 goals so far.
Liverpool will face a couple of familiar faces against Barcelona with Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez, who were part of The Reds in the past but now they will wear Barca jersey at The Anfield.
However, in the quarterfinals clash Liverpool’s attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firmino fired them with a 4-1 win over Porto into the last four where they will face Catalan giants Barcelona. Apart from the attacking trio defender Virgil van Dijk also scored the goal for The Reds.
It was the second consecutive elimination for the Portuguese side against Klopp’s Reds. The English side routed Porto 5-0 at the Estadio do Dragao in the first leg of the round of 16 last season.
