Arsenal have 13 FA cups in their locker, while United have 12. Fortunately, both the top performing teams in the FA cup met in the 4th round at the Emirates. Solksjaer aimed to make it 8 out of 8 since arriving and Unai Emery was seeking silverware for the first time in England and there was no better chance for the gunners than the FA cup. Sanchez returned to the Emirates for the 1st time after his move to United, while Lukaku and Lingard accompanied him up front. The gunners started both Aubameyang and Lacazette with Iwobi supporting them. Still, no Ozil in the starting 11 as Ramsey began as CAM.
The gunners started particularly well. Kolasinac was driving in on Ashley Young and Iwobi was dancing with the United defense, however, no significant chance was created. Lacazette had to drift back to receive the ball and create something. United were comfortable- Matic and Pogba controlled the midfield. Pogba received the ball in the Arsenal penalty area and tried to shift it past Petr Cech, but the veteran goalkeeper saved well. Man United had all the momentum. Moments later, Lukaku received the ball outside the box and with 3 arsenal defenders covering him, he couldn’t shoot, but he saw the cheeky Chilean Sanchez go through and played him in breaking the offside trap. The Chilean went past Cech and scored against his former club. Arsenal responded with threatening shots at Romero, but an Aaron Ramsey failed attempt gave way for Shaw to counter. He passed the ball to Lukaku who was running down his flank, he squared it for Lingard who talk a touch and slotted it past Cech. 2 goals in 2 minutes for the red devils, Arsenal’s 14th FA cup was fading away. The Gunners needed a goal to boost their confidence. Iwobi was running down the line and found Ramsey. He past through Young easily and crossed in for Lacazette to nibble the ball to Aubameyang who scored in an empty net. 2-1 and half-time had approached.
Emery pushed Torreira forward as Xhaka was the only CDM in the second half. They did create chances. Maitland Niles crossed in for Ramsey to head to the near post, but Romero saved fantastically. While Arsenal were deploying all their men forward, it was United who countered with Lukaku, Pogba, and Lingard creating chances. Both the sides made changes with Ozil coming on for the gunners, while both Rashford and Martial were brought on for the devils. Ozil was involved a lot but didn’t create much. Pogba drove through in a counter-attack to shoot to which Cech saved but handed the ball over to Martial who scored well. 3-1 to United, the match was over. Arsenal were headed towards the exit, while United-the 5th round.
