According to Football.London’s Chris Wheatley, Shkodran Mustafi has turned down a contract extension and plans to leave Arsenal on a free next summer.
After being told that he was surplus to requirements at the Emirates by former manager Unai Emery, he stayed after receiving no offers. That panned out well for the German who became a regular fixture at the defense with David Luiz under new boss Mikel Arteta.
Had he not got injured in the FA Cup semi-final against Man City, the 27-year-old was destined to feature in the final win against Chelsea.
Tears will not be shed after Mustafi’s departure.
But now the German has returned from injury and Arsenal were believed to be planning to tie him down, to avoid another player leave on a free. But their plans disappeared into thin air after the defender reportedly turned down an offer.
Arsenal fans will hardly shed a tear if the German does end up leaving the Emirates. Mustafi’s spell has been regarded as a failure as he was part of the latter Wenger and whole of Unai Emery Era, where the Gunners’ defense was extremely leaky.
Arsenal were believed to be open for negotiations for Mustafi this summer. But due to a completely different football ecosystem, he was not able to move away.
However, it now looks like his future is settled, away from the Emirates.
