The race for the European golden shoe is on and leading the charts once again is FC Barcelona’s, Lionel Messi. It’s no surprise for the Argentine topping the list, given the season he has had so far. With 33 goals to his name so far, Messi remains the sharpshooter for now.
Followed by Messi, is PSG’s wonderkid Kylian Mbappe who has scored 30 goals in Ligue 1 and is the second player in the top five leagues to breach the 30-goal mark after Messi. The Argentine is looking to make it a record 6th title in a row and given his goal-scoring spree at the moment, the little magician is ahead in the race to bag the golden shoe once again.
However, Messi’s rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, has crashed out of the top 10 as he has scored 19 goals so far for Juventus. He recently won the Serie A title making him the only player in history to win Europe’s top three leagues.
With five games left to play for FC Barcelona in the La Liga, Messi has plenty of options so far but the Catalan giants would look to rest the superstar given the stiff competition they will face in the UEFA Champions League against Liverpool in the semifinals.
PSG are as well left with five games which gives Mbappe time as well to overtake and break Messi’s record. However, with Neymar and Cavani back in the squad, the spoils might have to be shared.
With Messi and Mbappe on top, the chances of any other player in the race are slim as on third position is Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella with 22 goals, followed by Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the fourth with 21 goals.
Messi will look to lead FC Barcelona to the Champions League title while other contenders are Liverpool as well. With an eyes on the treble once again, Barca face a Liverpool which look hungry for European success and given the attacking unit they possess of Salah, Mane and Firminho, Klopp’s Reds are ready for battle.
