Both, the Spurs and Chelsea currently hold places for the champions league in the premier league table but are no favorites to win the league. With the European cups fixtures a month to go, they eyed a place in the finals of Silverware- the Carabao Cup. Both teams brought on strong teams with Kane, Alli, and Son starting for the Spurs and Hazard, Willian and Odoi for the Blues. The 1st leg was to be played at Wembley and the 2nd at Stamford Bridge.
The away side began strongly. Willian and Hazard created early opportunities, but Tottenham’s resilient defense matched their attack. In the 28th minute, Alderweireld launched up a long ball towards Kane to which he juggled the ball above the Chelsea Keeper Kepa, the keeper tackled him, but he was flagged offside. Through a VAR review, he was given a penalty and scored emphatically. 1-0 to the Spurs. Their first attack and they had scored. Chelsea had to respond, for an away goal was precious. Kante hit the post when crossed in by Hazard and Odoi’s deflected shot was helped on to the post be Gazzaniga. Odoi caused more problems on the flank, terrorizing Rose throughout, but with no Chelsea striker inbound, his production would meet no conclusion. The first half ended and Tottenham were on top.
Pochetino brought out no changes in the second half, however, Sarri brought out Morata. Chelsea continued to dominate in the second half, but it was Spurs with the first clear-cut chance. Kane played in Son and the South Korean struck wide. Kane was presented with another in the next few minutes, but he blasted his shots on Kepa Arrizabalaga. The last chances were with the away side. Kante and Fabregas shot from long but to no effect. The match ended 1-0 to the Spurs.
Tottenham had the narrow advantage, however, Chelsea have the second leg in 2 weeks at their home. There is all to play for in the 2nd leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
