Alex Albon has struggled this season in Red Bull’s hot seat. He has only one podium to show for in the 2020 season.

A team of Red Bull’s stature is sometimes too much of a pressure for some drivers in F1. Pierre Gasly failed to make the most of it as he was demoted to Toro Rosso after his driving was deemed pretty average. This season, Albon is in the same boots as Gasly, who now looks rejuvenated in Red Bull’s sister team AlphaTauri.

But all didn’t look as gloomy as it looks now. During his initial races, the Thai-British driver was lauded for his gutsy driving skills. To put it in different words, he overachieved in a place where many don’t survive long if results are not ‘extremely good’.

The pressure was increased a couple of weeks ago by the Red Bull bosses, and since then Albon seems to have struggled even more, with a lackluster drive outside of the top 10 in Portugal before his Imola spin. It looks to be falling apart for the driver who made his debut less than 15 months ago.

Unless something dramatic happens, the destiny of Albon might be only away from the Red Bull. Two drivers who have been heavily linked with the Energy drink F1 team are Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg. Both currently drive for Racing Point.

Sergio Perez might be given the nod by Red Bull

Sergio Perez is a more likely option for Christian Horner(Team Principal of Red Bull) as he is a more proven and experienced driver. He currently sits at sixth position in the Drivers’ Championship, almost 20 points ahead of Alex Albon. The Mexican has made consistent top 10 finishes in the past five years. Thus, he may prove to be an exciting edition for Red Bull.

Were Red Bull to take a replacement for Albon, it would be a shame for him not to be afforded the same second chance as Gasly and Kvyat – back at Alpha Tauri, the team with which he shone in the first place to earn promotion.

Gasly has transformed as a driver since returning to the B team, and there’s every reason to believe that Albon could do the same.
