After playing exceptionally well in the grand event of Johor Cup 2019, Indian junior men’s hockey team went down in the final battle of the glitzy event against challenging opponents Great Britain at Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Riding high on the confidence after back-to-back wins in the international tournament Indians have recently lost to British squad by a close margin of 1-2. As a result, Britain lifted the shining trophy of ‘Sultan of Johor Cup 2019’ at the end.

Not so surprisingly, the Indian men’s hockey squad got off an aggressive start in this match always while Britain was playing on the back foot right from the beginning of the game. But the moment when the grand finale battle reached to its climax in the dying minutes, Britain’s squad accelerated their speed and notched up to one more goal.

Both the teams struggled very hard to open an account first in the opening quarter. Neither India nor Great Britain able to register any goal in the first quarter. In the second quarter of the match, Indians tried, even more, harder to mark an opener in the game but strong defence of Great Britain held them firmly in the tightly-contested battle. This resulted in the first half went goalless for both the teams.

With the beginning of the third quarter, Indians accelerated their speed and successfully won some penalty corners to open an account in the game. But England’s star James Mazarelo again saved the fireful shot of Indians for his team’s mandatory win. As a result, the third quarter also ended with a 0-0 scoreline.

Both the teams were running out of time and desperately waiting to score an opener in the prestigious tournament. At last in the 49th minute of the game star Indian player Gursahibjit broke the deadlock and gave his team a straight 1-0 lead against Great Britain. But the celebration for men in blue was short-lived as in the next minute Britain squad also sounded with a goal to level up the scores with 1-1 draw.

Eventually, they turned out the heels in the dying minutes and Stuart Rushmere slotted the match-winning goal against Indians. In this way, Great Britain won the lustrous title of Johor Cup 2019 by 2-1 verdict.
