The Indian women’s hockey team gave a very tough competition to the hosts Great Britain in the second encounter of five-match series on Sunday. India outplayed a 1-1 draw against Britain’s squad at their own den. This time star forward Lalremsiami shined for the blues as she fired an important equalizer at 32nd minute of the game.
Without any surprise, Indians began like the superstars as they earned two penalty corners in a couple of starting minutes. However, Britain’s Maddie Hinch grabbed both the shots to ensure India didn’t take the lead too early. Later it was Britain’s turn to earn from the penalty corners and they achieved it successfully. Despite the brilliant saving efforts by Indian goalie, Britain still opened its account in the match with 1-0 lead at 8th minute of first quarter.
In the second half also Indians tried to dominate the early minutes but again prevented by Hinch. Though India kept causing problems for opponents but every time failed to open its account. After the first half ended, Britain was leading the scoreboard with 1-0 scoreline while India was still hoping for the miraculous win.
At last, the wait was finally over in the third quarter as Lalremsiami found the net in the 32nd minute. The 19-year-old young hockey player didn’t waste much time to hit the shot to the goalpost with full energy. This resulted in India leveled up the game with 1-1 scoreline. Though both the teams tried their best in the dying minutes of the second half but have to settle down with a draw only.
Earlier in the series opener, Indian women’s last-minute nerve-wracking action lifted them against Great Britain with 2-1 win. All thanks to star player Gurjit Kaur who fired the goal when only 48 seconds were left on the clock. Both the teams will next play against each other in the third encounter of the series which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 8 pm (IST). It will be interesting to see whether Indian women will be able to register one more win on their name or hosts will shock them with the first defeat of the ongoing series.
