Indian Women’s Hockey Team started their three-match series against South Korea on a winning note as the strong women team defeated the Koreans with a margin of 2-1 on Monday at Jincheon. The credit for the astonishing win of India goes to young striker Lalremsiami and Navneet Kaur who scored two goals for their side against Korea. While Lalremsiami opened the account for India in the 20th minute of the game, Navneet Kaur doubled the lead in the 40th minute in order to seal the first out of three-match series against Korean Women. India could have scored the opener earlier in first quarter if the squad had not missed the opportunity to score from a penalty corner.
The Head coach of Indian Women’s squad Sjoerd Marijne encouraged her team to perform even better by saying, “considering this was our first match, I think the result was good but the performance can be better”. She also added, “we tried some new things in the match and it was interesting to see how we handle the change”.
Moreover, the hosting team Korea were awarded five penalty corners in the game but they managed to convert only one in the 48th minute with a perfect hit from Shin Hyejeong. In the final quarter also, Korean girls won the chance to earn another penalty corner in the last quarter of the match but brilliant goalie Savita made commendable efforts to save her team’s lead.
Earlier, in their last tour against Malaysia, Indian Women’s squad clinched a 4-0 victory under the guidance of Sjoerd Marijne. Despite missing the services of star players Rani Rampal midfielder Namita Toppo and drag-flicker Gurjit Kaurdue in the tournament, Indian Women still kept their hopes alive to win the title.
India will next take on Korean Women in the second game on Wednesday. The three-match series against Korea is going to help the Indian squad to brace themselves for FIH Women’s Series Finals which is all set to roll from June 15 at Hiroshima, Japan.
