It was a very different set NBA Draft. Players were met virtually and couldn’t be together with their family and friends and shake the commissioner’s hands as he calls their name on the Draft night.
The Draft was held at the ESPN’s studios with all players on video calls. An NBA player’s one of the most memorable moments is to hear his name get called on the Draft night. Let’s look into some of the draft picks made teams.
Anthony Edwards, a prolific shooting guard out of Georgia was drafted as the first pick of the 2020 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He will be put together with the duo superstar of D’Angelo Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns. The Wolves were the worst team with the worst record in the past season.
Edwards was followed by James Wiseman and LaMelo Ball who were picked by the Golden State Warriors and Charlotte Hornets respectively. These 3 players were highly expected to be the top 3 picks of the draft.
Surprisingly, Patrick Williams of Florida State jumped all the way to the number 4 pick after generally being seen as a late lottery pick.
Meanwhile, some prospects fell much further than expected. Tyrese Haliburton was mocked as high as the 4th pick, was eventually drafted by the Sacramento Kings at the 12th pick. Saddiq Bey was expected to be a top 10 to 15 pick but was taken by the Nets as the 19th pick. Desmond Bane, one of the best shooters in the Draft barely stayed in the first round as he was the 30th pick to Memphis Grizzlies.
Some of the other notable draft picks were:-
8th pick – Knicks Draft Obi Toppin
15th pick – Magic Draft Cole Anthony
18th pick – Mavericks Draft Josh Green
24th pick – Nuggets Draft RJ Hampton
32nd pick – Hornets Draft Vernon Carey
41st pick – Spurs Draft Tre Jones
48th pick – Warriors Draft Nico Mannion
53rd pick – Thunder Draft Cassius Winston
54th pick – Pacers Draft Cassius Stanley
This was clearly one of the most unique NBA Drafts ever. This is surely a talented class of players who will want to make a mark from the moment they join their NBA teams.
