India’s Olympic-bound boxers will travel to France and Italy starting next week on a 52-day training-cum- competition trip as they get ready for the Tokyo Games, except for an indisposed MC Mary Kom and two others.
Mary Kom is recovering from a bout of dengue, currently, and has ruled out travelling abroad at least this year due to a threat of Covid-19. The six-time works champion and London Olympics bronze-medalist told PTI that she had not been keeping well since the last two weeks due to dengue. She feels better now but won’t be travelling to Europe. The Europe assignment starts on October 15th. The 38-year-old, set to make her second Olympic appearance also added that she will be based in Delhi and train there. She will assess the situation next year and then take a call to travel abroad, hopefully when a Covid-19 vaccine comes.
In total, a 28-member contingent will travel to Europe, including 10 men and 6 women boxers along with the ancillary staff. The government has sanctioned an estimated ₹1.31 crore for this exposure.
Six out of nine Olympic-bound players are travelling for the assignment. They include – Amit Panghal (52kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Satish Kumar (+91kg), Simranjit Kaur (60 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) and Pooja Rani (75 kg).
The lives missing from the Tokyo-bound list travelling for this assignment are Vikas Krishan (69 kg), who is training in the USA and Manish Kaushik (63 kg), recovering from an injury, among with Mary Kom.
The players will be training at Assisi, Italy for a period of 52 days from October 15 to December 5. Thirteen of these boxers will also participate in the ‘Alex Vastine’ International Tournament to be held in Nantes, France from October 28-30.
The World Olympic qualifying event scheduled for next year is the last event for Indian boxers to obtain quotas for the Tokyo Games.
