Over the past few weeks, talk about the topic has been racism. The discrimination of certain individuals based on their color is highly objectionable and should be treated with utmost seriousness. Racism has been a long-standing problem in our society for a long time. It has also been in sports for a long time, with the sad part being that it still exists today.
Sports are a platform which provides all talented individuals an opportunity to compete and be the best. However, due to some people, racism still exists in such spaces.
Many players have complained about how they had to face racism in their careers. The recent Black Lives Matter movement is encouraging many players to come forward with their stories. Hearing all such stories, authorities too have made a strong stand against racism in any manner.
Mercedes supports BLM in their own unique way
Formula One champion Mercedes unveiled black-liveried cars for the 2020 season on Monday as part of a public pledge to further improve diversity within the team and the world of motorsport.
Mercedes have traditionally raced in silver throughout their time in Formula One but will switch to black and have ‘End Racism’ emblazoned on the halo of both cars.
The team states the Black Lives Matter movement has “shone a searching light on how much we need new measures in the fight against racism.”
“Racism and discrimination have no place in our society, our sport or our team: this is a core belief at Mercedes,” Mercedes team Principal Toto Wolff states in a statement.
“But having the right beliefs and the right mindset isn’t enough if we remain silent.”
“We wish to use our voice and our global platform to speak up for respect and equality. Silver Arrow will race in black for the entire 2020 season. We show our commitment to greater diversity within our team and our sport.”
