According to reports, Arsenal defender Sokratis has received multiple offers from Premier League, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. But his likely destination remains the Italian club, Napoli. That move, however, hinges on Kalidou Koulibaly moving to fellow Premier League team, Manchester City.
Sokratis is believed to be keen on a move to Naples given his frustrations of not getting much time under Mikel Arteta. He hasn’t started a match in the 2020/21 season for Arsenal and the Gunners are willing to let their defender leave. Napoli has made it clear to Arsenal that they want the club to terminate the Greek’s contract so that he can join the Italian side on a free.
If Koulibaly departs Napoli, his arrival is imminent. Gennaro Gattuso, now the manager of the Italian giants, was Sokratis’ teammate at AC Milan and is keen to sign him. Apart from Gattuso, he will also join ex-teammate, Kostas Manolas. Reports suggest Arsenal want a fee of around €3 million given they are raising funds to acquire the likes of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid and Houssem Auoar from the French club, Lyon. Mikel Arteta is keen to transform his midfield options for the new season and has identified those two as his top targets.
The lack of creativity from the current Arsenal midfield was criticized heavily last season. Mikel Arteta had identified four positions he wanted Arsenal to strengthen on. Central defense, central defensive midfield, central attacking midfield, and a winger were believed to be Arteta’s priorities.
Given that Arsenal has secured the signature of Brazilians, Willian, and Gabriel Magalhaes, they are trying to go all out on Partey and Auoar who shone in last season’s Champions League. Both are reportedly keen on a move to Arsenal and would fancy being a “part of the project” of Mikel Arteta. Since his arrival just before the Christmas, Arteta has guided Arsenal into the right direction with his vision and ideas. Winning the FA Cup in the given situation proved to be a testament of what the Spanish manager is trying to build.
If Arsenal does end up with Partey and Auoar, it might prove to be a turning point in their recent history and set a tone of something really special.
