The Indian freestyle wrestler Bajrang Punia has made the country proud by winning an astonishing gold medal in Dan Kolov – Nikola Petrov tournament at Bulgaria. Dedicating his victory to brave Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Abhinandan Varthaman, Punia tweeted, “I want to dedicate my gold to Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. He has inspired me. I want to meet him one day and also shake hands with him”.
The World Championship Silver medalist brought down USA’s Jordan oliver by 12-3 in the recent men’s 65 kg freestyle wrestling final. This leads to a remarkable kick start of a season for Punia.
However, star female wrestler Vinesh Phogat who won gold in Asian Games 2018 had to settle at Silver after losing her 53 kg women’s wrestling final to China’s Qianyu Pang by 2-9. “I have to work on my upper body because my opponents are strong. I took part in this event as I need to know my opponents,” Vinesh said.
This is not the first time when Punia has made the country proud, the 25-year-old has won gold medals in Asian Games 2018 and in Commonwealth Games 2018. He also claimed the No. 1 position in 65 kg category of men’s wrestling after winning silver at World Wrestling Championship last year. This was the 10th medal of Bajrang Punia in as many international wrestling tournaments.
