World number one tennis player Spain’s Rafael Nadal defeated Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka by 7-6, 6-4 in the ATP Cup in Perth Arena and leads his team into the quarterfinals.
In Brisbane, world number two Serbia’s Novak Djokovic easily defeated Chilean Christian Garin by 6-3, 6-3, which led Serbia into the final-eight with a 2–1 victory. Serbia team have won all three of their matches played in Group A. At the same time in Group B, Spain led by Nadal, defeated Japan by a margin of 3–0. In the singles match, Nadal had to resort to a tiebreaker to win the first game, but he took Spain to the knockout by claiming the second game easily. Spain’s Roberto Batista Agut defeated Go Soeda of Japan 6-2, 6-4 before winning in doubles.
On the other hand, Poland beat Austria 2–1 in Group-E in Sydney. In this match, world number four, Austrian player Dominic Thiem was defeated by Hubert Hurkacz of Poland by 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. This is Thiem’s second defeat in this new year.
