An absolute RG classic was witnessed in which Kiki Bertens triumphed 7-6(5), 3-6, 9-7 in a three-hour 11-minute clash which left her in cramps and Italian Sara Errani screaming in obscenity. Dutch fifth seed Kiki Bertens was accused of faking injury as she was taken off court in a wheelchair after a stormy Roland Garros second round win over former finalist Sara Errani.

The Dutchwoman had to overcome a 5-2 deficit and save a match-point in the third set while struggling with cramps that became so bad she needed the wheelchair at Roland Garros. Errani, who appeared to mock Bertens’ cramp during the game, left the court without tapping racquets at the net as is customary, and also shouted an obscenity as she departed.
“After one hour, she’s injured but then she’s running around like never before,” Errani, runner-up at the French Open in 2012, told the media. “She leaves the court in a chair and now she’s in the locker room and eating in the restaurant, perfect. She exaggerated. It made me very angry. So, well done to her, but she can win without doing that.”
Victoria Azarenka

US Open runner-up and veteran Victoria Azarenka is out of the French Open in the second round after the 10th seed lost to 161st-ranked Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Azarenka’s exit means all four women who reached the semifinals in New York earlier this month already are gone in Paris. Serena Williams withdrew earlier in the French Open because of an injured Achilles tendon, Jennifer Brady lost in the first round at Roland Garros, and US Open champion Naomi Osaka did not make the trip to France. Schmiedlova had lost 13 consecutive Grand Slam matches in a streak dating to 2015 until beating Venus Williams in the first round this week.

Azarenka is a former No. 1 and a two-time champion at the Australian Open.
