World No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic has entered into the semi-finals of Madrid Open 2019 without even hitting a ball as his opponent in the quarter finals ninth-seeded Marin Cilic withdrew from the match following his painful stomach problems.
The 30-year-old Croatian player took to Twitter to announce the news of his bad health condition and said, “I am sorry to announce that I must withdraw from today’s match. I have had a terrible night dealing with a case of food poisoning. I am extremely disappointed to have my time in Madrid end in this way. Thank you for the support.”

The US Open title winner Cilic had started his Madrid Open journey with great momentum as the Croatian star had already saved four match points in his opening encounter against Martin Klizan on Monday and needed a total of three sets to win each of his next two matches but unfortunately he has to rule himself out due to food poisoning.
While on the other side, Novak is all set to face the Austria Champion Dominic Thiem who ended the run of 20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer in the quarters on Friday with a clinical margin of 3-6, 7-6 (13-11), 6-4. Earlier, in his last match in the tournament top-seeded Serbian player Djokovic defeated young American Taylor Fritz by 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Moreover, Novak had previously clinched the title of Madrid Open two-time in 2011 and 2016. After completing his clay court season he will next prepare for chasing his fourth straight title of Roland Garros in June 2019.
Apart from Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem, second seeded Rafael Nadal also cruised to semi finals after defeating Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland with a margin of 6-1 6-2 in just 69 minutes of action. The five-time Madrid Open title winner will lock horns with ninth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in the next round.
Moreover, Novak kick-started his year with Qatar Open in which he was shocked by Roberto Bautista Agut in the semifinals which was later followed by one more defeat against Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets at Indian Wells 2019. Now, it will be interesting to see whether Djokovic can turn his fortunes this time or will face one more defeat.
