The 78th-ranked Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov stunned World No. 3 tennis great Roger Federer in the historical quarterfinals of US Open 2019 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The dashing Bulgarian star outplayed the Swiss ace Federer in the unforgettable five-set match of his life and clinched maiden 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over third-seeded superstar.
Dimitrov put up an excellent show against tennis champion Federer in dramatic action under the lights. At first, it was quite easy for the legend to crush his lowly-ranked opponent. But later his overconfidence cost him the second set as Dimitrov came back stronger to dominate the action. As a result, he won the second set. Though Federer again picked up the momentum and clinched the third set. At last the see-saw battle finally ended and Dimitrov came out as the winner.
Both Dimitrov and Federer have met seven times in the past and fortunately the Swiss great sealed all the matches with perfect win. This was the first time when Federer fall short against Dimitrov in such a prestigious tournament.
Next hurdle for the talented player, Grigor Dimitrov is World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev of Russia who defeated Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka in the quarters with the close margin of 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. The upcoming semi-final match between both the strong contenders is going to be a nail biter as both Dimitrov and Medvedev will go all out to book their spot in the final showdown.
After clinching the win over legendary player Federer, Dimitrov expressed himself by saying, “I think the past six, seven months have been pretty rough for me. But I had somebody to lean on, my friends, my family. I kept on believing again in the work, the rehab I had to put behind my shoulder, the practice, fixing up the racquet a little bit. Further he also added, “at the end of the year, you have a result like that. It’s pretty special to me”.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer reached to the quarter-final round after defeating Belgian professional David Goffin by 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 comfortable win. While Bulgarian legend Dimitrov made it to quarters after beating Alex de Minaur in his last battle. He toppled the Australian star with a comfortable margin of 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 at Grandstand court.
