World No.3 Roger Federer began his 2019 US Open Championship on a winning note as the Swiss veteran edged past the Indian debutant Sumit Nagal in the very first round of the grand tournament. Federer defeated Nagal in the four sets with the scoreline of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 at Flushing Meadows. The 20-time Grand Slam master took two hours and 50 minutes to bow out the talented Indian.

At the beginning of the game, it was Nagal who played like a boss as he gave a major scare to Roger Federer after winning the first set very easily. Even Federer was shocked by Nagal’s performance in the first set. With three double faults during the first set, Federer lost the opening game while the talented Indian dominated the lead by 6-4 scoreline.

In the second set of the game, Federer clawed his way back and tried to suppress World number 190 Nagal. But the Indian who got a firm backing from the Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli didn’t give up so easily. He battled till his last breath in the game. Unfortunately, it was not the day for Sumit, as a result, iconic tennis player Federer won the match comfortably.

After the show wrapped up, Roger Federer appreciated Nagal’s performance in his very first US Open Championship. He expressed his feelings about the young opponent by saying,”I think he knows what he can bring. That’s why I think he’s going to have a very solid career. But, of course, it’s not the game that comes out with the biggest surprises. I think he did it very well tonight”.

Apart from Federer, top-ranked player Novak Djokovic, World No.5 Daniil Medvedev, World No. 7 Kei Nishikori and World No. 58 Dan Evans also qualified for the next round in US Open 2019. When on one side, Roger Federer will take on a Bosnian professional Damir Džumhur in the second round, World No.1 Novak Djokovic on the other will face Argentine star Juan Ignacio Lóndero in the upcoming battle on Wednesday.
