One of the greatest players of all time Novak Djokovic has started his clay court season of Madrid Open 2019 with a clinical win as the World No. 1 has defeated young American Taylor Fritz with a margin of 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday in the second round of the grand tournament. The top-ranked player in Men’s singles had earlier clinched the Madrid Open title twice in 2011 and 2016. He will next battle for chasing his fourth straight title of Roland Garros in next month.
Moreover, it was a lucky day for unseeded Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka also as the Swiss superstar thrashed Pierre-Hugues Herbert by 6-2, 6-3 in the very first round of the ongoing tournament. The 34-year-old World No.3 will next take on Argentine Guido Pella in the second round of Madrid Open. Pelle has come across the second round after defeating Barcelona finalist Daniil Medvedev by 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
Speaking on his full-fledged win over French professional, Wawrinka said, “It was a great first match. I’ve been good on the practice court, feeling really good, so it was important to start well today”. He also added “I’m playing well and feeling well on the court. I still have some big result inside me so hopefully they can come sooner than later”.
This year Madrid Open has also witnessed 20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer who is participating in clay court season after three years. The third-seeded Swiss veteran faced Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the second round after a bye.
While in the women’s WTA draw, two-time title winner and third-seeded Simona Halep of Romania, crashed the hopes of Johanna Konta of winning the Madrid Open crown as she beat the British player by 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of the event.
