The star-studded clay court tournament of Madrid Open has witnessed a mixed-emotions day for all the top-ranked tennis players. It was all smiles for Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem and Rafael Nadal but Swiss veteran Roger Federer lost his game in the tournament and with this his comeback in the clay court season after three years was abruptly ended.
One of the greatest tennis player Rafael Nadal edge past the Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka in just 69 minutes of action to book his spot in semis. Nadal defeated the three-time Grand Slam winner with a margin of 6-1 6-2 on Friday. With this successful victory in quarters, the Spaniard has progressed to semifinals where he will face ninth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.
The 32-year-old tennis champion expressed his joy of winning by saying,”A very positive match, I’m very happy with the way I played and in general terms, it was a great performance. I’m really happy to get through to the semis in this way”. He also added,”I would use my performance against Wawrinka as ‘an example’ for how to approach his next challenge against the Greek rising star”. While breaking Wawrinka’s 11-time record of appearing in the semi-finals of Madrid Open, Nadal did not concede even a single break point during his battle against him.
Earlier in his Indian Wells 2019 tour, Rafael Nadal thrashed Serbian player Filip Krajinovic by 6-3, 6-4 in BNP Paribas Open. The Spanish superstar has won a total of 17 Grand Slam titles as well as bagged 33 ATP Tour Masters 1000 titles.
Apart from World No. 2 Nadal, ace player Novak Djokovic also qualified for final-four round without playing any shot as his opponent for quarter final ninth-seeded Marin Cilic withdrew from the match following his painful stomach problems.
